How does the salt trick for growing tomatoes work?
The Bavarian State Research Center for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG) has found in a trial that salt water can improve the taste of tomatoes, depending on the variety, of course. Martin Schulz of the LWG recommends this trick especially for balcony plants, since excessive salt addition can lead to soil salination in the case of soil plants.
Schulz explains: “You simply end up with smaller tomatoes that have a higher concentration of ingredients, which makes them taste better.” This trick is particularly beneficial for cocktail tomatoes, which are considered to be the tastier tomatoes anyway, while tomatoes on the vine are more popular for their quantity.
How much salt is right for growing tomatoes?
Although there is no precise guideline, a study by the University of Pisa has shown that adding salt to irrigation water increases the nutrient content of tomatoes, especially antioxidants. The Italian researchers recommend adding no more than one gram of salt per liter of water as a reference point.
How often should tomatoes be watered?
Another tip for flavorful tomatoes: “Many people think that a lot helps a lot. But a lot of water is in fact counterproductive, especially when the tomatoes are first planted,” says Schulz. He advises watering regularly but moderately. Watering more after cool nights or after a long dry spell can also cause the tomatoes to split.
